PATH2ZERO Holds First International Knowledge Exchange Board

On 17th October 2025, PATH2ZERO held the inaugural meeting of its International Knowledge Exchange Board (IKEB), bringing together experts and organisations committed to advancing global pathways toward net-zero transport.

The IKEB acts as a hub for sharing insights, knowledge and expertise on both existing and emerging decarbonisation pathways. Its role is to help strengthen international understanding of what is needed to transform the transport sector, and how to accelerate progress to net-zero transport at the international level.

Exploring Uncertainty in Decarbonisation Pathways

The first meeting examined one of the most critical challenges in the assessment of decarbonization pathways: uncertainty.  Discussions centred on how to evaluate and account for the many types of uncertainty that influence decarbonisation planning, including:

  • Differences in levels of political commitment,  planning and resource allocation given to targets
  • Risks that long-term policies may be revised or reversed by future administrations
  • Shifting social and economic conditions that affect policy impact and feasibility

These factors shape both the credibility of national and regional transport targets and the likelihood of achieving them.

The meeting heard excellent presentations from three members of the IKEB, Pierpaolo Cazzola, Yacan Wang and Kexin Geng. This was followed by engaging, insightful and highly constructive discussion, where participants reflected on how uncertainty affects decarbonisation efforts across different regions and discussed practical approaches for mitigation, management and transparency.

Next steps for the IKEB

The IKEB will continue to meet throughout the lifetime of PATH2ZERO, with each session focusing on a key topic related to net-zero transport pathways. PATH2ZERO is also exploring additional platforms to support continued engagement and knowledge exchange between meetings.
