Webinar Demonstrates the Importance of Connecting Research and Practice in Transport Decarbonisation
On 25 February 2026, Path2Zero and the MarLEN project hosted a webinar exploring pathways toward climate-neutral mobility in road and maritime transport. The session brought together a diverse audience from across Europe to discuss practical solutions, research findings, and policy implications.
Some of the key takeaways include:
Bridging research and practice: The webinar showcased evidence from both the Pass2Zero and MarLEN projects, demonstrating how research can inform operational decisions and support cities and operators in making transport systems more sustainable.
Policy is essential but challenging to implement: While targets for decarbonisation exist at national and EU levels, speakers emphasised that translating these into practical action requires overcoming technical, operational, and institutional barriers.
Opportunities lie in innovation and optimisation: Participants learned that both road and maritime sectors can reduce emissions through operational improvements, asset reuse, and technology deployment, highlighting that practical interventions often complement policy goals.
Collaboration and knowledge sharing accelerate progress: Interactive discussions, Q&A sessions, and live polling revealed that exchanging lessons across cities, industries, and research organisations is crucial for scaling effective decarbonisation strategies.
The webinar reinforced that achieving climate-neutral transport is feasible when research, policy, and collaboration work hand in hand, and that understanding both challenges and actionable solutions is key to driving tangible impact.
Thank you to speakers, Jöran Ritzke, (Senior National Advisor, Project Management Juelich; MarLEN project coordinator) and Rosa Picón García, (Researcher, Polytechnic University of Madrid; Path2Zero project partner) and thank you to all the wonderful participants for your interest and engagement!
